Student Pride 2021

With some form of ‘new’ normality being restored just in time for National Student Pride week, we have a look at all the great events which took place online from 19-25 April, and some of our personal highlights and best bits. Now in its 16th year, I think it is safe to say National Student Pride is here to stay and at Best Gay Life we aren’t mad about it.

Everyone from Stephen Fry to YUNGBLUD on queer panels, club nights, performances and so much more all exclusively for you from the comfort of your own home. We might not be able to be out in full inclusive force right now, but at least the outfit preparation is a tad easier this year.

“If I was a student now I would be thinking, well that’s a whole year of no intimate encounters!”

My favourite quote from the wonderful week of queer representation, when Stephen Fry went all in with Alan Cummings on Grindr, crushing, AIDs and COVID. As the headlining conversation for the week, it definitely is not one to be missed. Addressing their views on current affairs, right through to Cummings first London sex party and what the tombstones on Hampstead Heath are really there for and you can check out the full interview on the National Student Pride Facebook and YouTube channels.

This Evening

Hosted by Nick Grimshaw and Aimee Phillips for one night only and all for National Student Pride. The star-studded chat show is not one to disappoint, joined by, to name a few, Joanna Lumley, YUNGBLUD, Jessie Ware and everyone’s fan favourite, Scotland’s own Lawrence Chaney.

This inclusive exclusive includes a quiz with Davina McCall, interviews, giveaways, a live performance from YUNGBLUD and see’s Lawrence Chaney go from RuPaul’s Drag Race winner to our very own Agony Aunt for evening.

If that wasn’t enough a conversation with Joanna Lumley discussing the time Grimshaw and Lumley spent working on Ab Fab together, somehow ends with Grimmy having a go at pole dancing, what more could you ask for?

Made for Students

Student pride is made for students, by students, the week celebrating National Student Pride is packed full of entertaining content, but also incorporates the conversations that need to be had to make our community a stronger and happier place. On Monday the headline panel discussion was all around LGBTQ+ mental health with YouTuber, Daniel Howell, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner, Lawrence Chaney, LBC presenter, Natasha Devon, and model, Munroe Bergdorf.

In its 16th year National Student Pride in the age of COVID has returned bigger and better than ever, talking about hard hitting topics in the LGBTQ+ community, while bringing us all of that Pride joy we all could use a dose of right now.
